Project Manager Screen

The Project allows you to organize your documents into different projects and child projects(sub-projects). Merge, Move, Duplicate, Delete, Backup and Restore Projects.  Add Files to projects and Copy, Move and Delete individual data Files.

The Ethnograph Editor

The Ethnograph Editor automatically formats your files, saves them as 'ETH' files, numbers and assigns them to a project - The Editor even has a spell check function! You can also copy and paste data into the Editor from your word processor or web browser

Code a Data File: Code Sets

Code data using your mouse!  Choose the 'code sets' option to apply a number of code words to a segment at one time.  Select code words from the Master List or Family Tree.

Code a Data File: Quick Code

Quick Code lets you enter one code at a time.  You can apply this code to other segments with a few quick mouse clicks.

Attach a Memo

You can attach 26 memos to each line of text in a data file.  Each Memo can be 32,000 characters.  You can also attach 1000 memos to the data file itself and 1000 Memos to the Project itself.  You can also use memos as search output, print memos with the text to which they refer, and create your own categories for memos.

List Memos

List Memos shows you all the text, file and project Memos you have created. There are many ways you can filter and sort this list. You can view a memo by clicking on it.

Code Book and Family Tree

Code words are automatically added to the code book as you code your data.   Of course you can also create a code book before you start coding your data.   Code words are also automatically added to the Family Tree.  You can use the Family Tree to organize your code words into hierarchical groupings.

Search Procedure Options

  1. You can search for coded segments by 1)single code words, 2) multiple code words linked by 'and' or 'not', and 3) speaker/section identifiers.

  2. You can filter your search by 1) face sheets, 2) identifier sheets, 3) identifiers, and 4) file codes. 

  3. You can generate output as 1) segments, 2) frequencies, 3) summary reports, and 4) memos.

  4. You can search all files or only files that you select.

  5. Segment and Summary output can be organized by code word, or by the sequence the code words occurred in each data file.

Search Filter: Face Sheet

Face Sheets are characteristics of data files.  You can filter a search based on the characteristics of data files

Search Filter: Identifier Sheet

Identifier Sheets describe the characteristics of Speaker/Section Identifiers within a data file.  You can filter a search based on the characteristics of speakers in a data file.

Search Output: Segments

Segment Output displays the text of each segment defined by a code word used in a search.  There are multiple options for displaying segments.  You can attach memos to segments.  You can expand the context of the segment on the screen.

Search Output: Frequencies

Frequency Output give you frequency counts of each code word used in a search.  It also gives you relative frequency percentages for each code word both within and across data files.

Search Output: Summary Output

Summary Output displays a list of segments found for each code word in each data file.   It tells you the start and stop lines, the number of lines in the segment, and cumulative line counts.
